Each year over 7000 couples get married in Essex which makes it one of the most popular wedding destinations in England. Increasingly a civil ceremony is the preferred choice with 70% of couples now opting for this type of ceremony.

With a civil ceremony in mind, there is the choice of Registration Offices or Approved Venues for the important day.
In 2010/11, 1751 couples chose a Registration Office wedding.

It may surprise you to learn that the most popular civil ceremony location in the whole of Essex is The Roman Rooms in Colchester Registration Office, where more than 440 couples ‘tie the knot’ each year. For more information on the ceremony rooms visit www.celebrateinessex.co.uk

When it comes to Weddings ‘The Only Way Is Essex’

The Marriage Act 1994 enabled couples to marry in what are commonly known as ‘Approved Venues’ which are specifically licensed by local authorities for civil ceremony purposes.
Previously, couples had to choose between a Church and a Register Office wedding.

The increase in popularity of weddings in ‘Approved Venues’ has been staggering. There are now over 140 such venues in the County. In 2010/11, 47% of all ceremonies took place at
such venues. When you see the range and quality of ‘Approved Venues’ in Essex it is no surprise that this type of civil ceremony has become the preferred choice.

Choosing a venue

You may wish to marry in the area where you and your partner live, but you don’t have to. You can choose to marry in any Register Office in England or Wales, as well as in Approved
Venues. With so much choice, where do you begin? Fortunately, Essex Registration Offices have something for everyone.

If you’re planning a simple wedding, we have attractive, contemporary rooms. If you’re looking for something more traditional, we’ve got historic buildings with a wealth of character.
If you want a stylish background to your wedding, you’ll find something to match your taste. Many of our offices have their own gardens for photography, while others are close to attractive
public parks or gardens that are favourites with wedding photographers.

Most important of all, you’ll be dealing with people who know how to make your day really special. The staff of the Essex Registration Service pride themselves on making each wedding a
unique experience to treasure.

Telephone any of our offices and talk about the ceremony, your preferred choice of music, flowers and the photography. Or simply go and see for yourself. You’ll find the staff friendly and
approachable and they’ll do their best to make your wedding day relaxed and enjoyable for everyone. For your own peace of mind, please contact us as soon as possible. That way, you’re more likely to get the location you really want.

Register Offices

When you’re planning your special day, you can now choose from a variety of options for your wedding ceremony. The Essex Register Office is located in Brentwood in a converted cottage on
the edge of Shenfield Common. The ceremony room is tastefully decorated and can accommodate 30 guests.

Former Register Office ceremony rooms

Seven former Register Office ceremony rooms are now available to couples for wedding ceremonies. These can be found in Braintree (John Ray House), Benfleet (The Registration Suite), Chelmsford (The Chelmer Rooms), Colchester (The Roman Rooms), Epping (The Victoria Suite), Harlow (The Watergarden Suite) and Saffron Walden (The Civic Suite). Each venue has a character of its own, but they all share the same commitment - to make your wedding an occasion to remember.

Advance bookings

All our offices give you the opportunity to make a provisional booking for your wedding up to 24 months in advance. The earliest you can legally enter your official notice of marriage is 12
months in advance of the wedding. A provisional booking can be made simply by telephoning, calling at the office of your choice or by written application.

Giving notice of marriage

Each person wanting to marry has to give their own notice of intention to marry to the Superintendent Registrar or nominated deputy in the area in which they reside. In Essex, this can be any
office (except Southend and Thurrock). Both parties must have resided in a district of England or Wales for at least 7 whole days immediately prior to giving a Notice of Marriage.

This notice will then be displayed on the public notice board for 15 days, after which, provided all documentation has been received and cleared, a certificate for marriage to proceed may be issued.
If you live in a different area to where the marriage will take place, you will need to apply for and obtain the authority for your marriage to take place. This authority must be delivered to the
Minister of the church, Superintendent Registrar or their deputy of the area where you are to marry.

You will still be able to marry in any Registration Office or Approved Venue in England or Wales irrespective of where you live, and your notice can still be taken up to one year in advance of the date of your wedding. A fee is currently charged for each notice given.

If either yourself or your partner are subject to immigration control, new rules introduced on 1st February 2005, require each of you to give Notice of Marriage at a designated Registration Office. For more information, contact the Essex Register Office Brentwood, Castle Point & Rochford, Colchester or Epping Fores

Essential documents

When you give notice of marriage, you and your partner need to give proof of identity. You may also be asked to provide proof of address. Passports or other proof of identity are acceptable. Additional documents will be required if either partner is under 18 or has been divorced or widowed.

Personalising your wedding

The ceremony can be simple or formal and can be tailored to your individual wishes.

The bride and groom may choose to be interviewed separately, allowing the bride to enter the room escorted by a friend or relative.

Flowers are provided in the room, but you may make your own floral arrangements. You can choose your own music which can be played as background while guests arrive, and at the end of the ceremony. You can also incorporate your choice of reading, which can be given by the Registrar or a guest. Each office has a selection of popular readings or you can bring your own. Please discuss your choice of reading or music, and any other special requirements with the Superintendent Registrar in advance of the ceremony.

It is important to remember that a marriage in a Register Office or Approved Premises exists for Civil weddings only and does not include any type of religious ceremony.

Advice from Essex Registration Service

The staff of the Essex Registration Service pride themselves on making each wedding a unique experience to treasure. Give them a call and talk about the ceremony, your music and flowers, the photography. Or go and see for yourself. You'll find the staff friendly and approachable and they'll do their best to make your wedding day relaxed and enjoyable for everyone.

If you would like more information on the Essex Registration Service or a copy of our guide `Getting Married in Essex', please contact Roger Robbins on 01245 430267. This brochure is also available in alternative formats i.e. Braille, Large Print, Audio Tape and CD. Copies available from Register Offices.

Arrival

The bride and groom may choose to be interviewed separately allowing the bride to enter the room escorted by a friend or relative.

It is very important for you and your guests to arrive at least 10 minutes earlier than the time of your marriage. This will allow you to be interviewed before the ceremony and for your guests to be
seated. You will be greeted by the Registrar who will see the bride and groom privately to check details and take fees for the marriage ceremony and certificate.

Parking

The amount of parking varies at each Registration Office. For further information, please contact the Registration Office where your wedding will be taking place. Most Approved Venues have ample
parking available.

Witnesses

The law requires that you are accompanied by at least two credible witnesses at your wedding. They may be relatives, friends or colleagues who must be able to speak and understand English.

The ceremony

The ceremony will begin with a short introduction by the Superintendent Registrar. The bride and groom will then be asked, in turn, to repeat a number of solemn declarations. If you would like to make additional vows and commitments to each other beyond the legally required ones, we will be happy to discuss this with you. The Superintendent Registrar will then state that the parties have made the declarations required by law and are now husband and wife together. The formal signing of the register will then take place, concluding the civil ceremony.

Words

“I do solemnly declare that I know not of any lawful impediment why I … may not be joined in matrimony to …”

or

“I declare that I know of no legal reason why I … may not be joined in marriage to …”

or by replying “I am” to the question

“Are you … free lawfully to marry …?”

Each of the parties must also say to the other (choosing one of the following statements):

“I call upon these persons here present to witness that I …
do take thee … to be my lawful wedded wife (or husband).”

or

“I … take you … to be my wedded wife (or husband).”

or

“I … take thee … to be my wedded wife (or husband).”

The ceremony may be enhanced by making additional vows and commitments to each other beyond the legally required ones.

The Registration staff in each area will be happy to discuss the ceremony options available to you. The Superintendent Registrar will state that the parties have made the declarations required.

Flowers

All Ceremony Rooms are tastefully decorated. You may, however, wish to make your own floral arrangements. Please discuss this with the Registration staff or the venue.

Music

You may provide your own choice of music. It can be played as background music while your guests assemble and again at the conclusion of the ceremony.

The Registration staff will need to have your requirements at least six to eight weeks before your wedding.

Another way to personalise the ceremony is to incorporate a reading of verse or a suitable piece of prose. Our offices have a selection of popular readings, which may be read by you or by one of your guests.

Music systems with CD players are provided in all our Registration Offices with a selection of suitable music. If, however, you have a favourite or meaningful piece you wish to have played, discuss it
well before the day with the Registration staff who will be happy to advise you. In an Approved Venue, you have other options, including live music.

Readings

You may wish to provide a piece of verse or prose which you prefer. However, due to legal constraints, no religious material may be used and the Superintendent Registrar or their nominated deputy must therefore approve the intended reading beforehand.

Yes I’ll marry you  (Pam Ayres)

Yes, I’ll marry you, my dear, And here’s the reason why;
So I can push you out of bed When the baby starts to cry,
And if we hear a knocking And it’s creepy and it’s late,
I hand you the torch you see, And you investigate.

Yes, I’ll marry you, my dear, You may not apprehend it,
But when the tumble-drier goes It’s you that has to mend it,
You have to face the neighbour Should our labrador attack him,
And if a drunkard fondles me It’s you that has to whack him.

Yes, I’ll marry you, You’re virile and you’re lean,
My house is like a pigsty You can help to keep it clean.
That sexy little dinner Which you served by candlelight,
As I do chipolatas, You can cook it every night!

It’s you who has to work the drill And put up curtain track,
And when I’ve got PMT it’s you who Gets the flack,
I do see great advantages, But none of them for you,
As so before you see the light, I do, I do, I do!

Where there is love  (Helen Steiner Rice)

Where there is love the heart is light,
Where there is love the day is bright,
Where there is love there is a song,
To help when things are going wrong
Where there is love there is a smile
To make all things seem more worthwhile,
Where there is love there’s quiet peace,
A tranquil place where turmoil’s cease -
Love changes darkness into light
And makes the heart take “wingless flight”.

Marriage is a promise of love  (Edmund O’Neill)

Marriage is a commitment to life – to the best that two people can find and bring out in each other .
It offers opportunities for sharing and growth no other human relationship can equal, a physical and emotional joining that is promised for a lifetime.
Within the circle of its love, marriage encompasses all of life’s most important relationships.
A wife and husband are each other’s best friend, confidant, lover, teacher, listener and critic.
There may come times when one partner is heartbroken or ailing, and the love of each other may resemble the tender caring of a parent for a child.
Marriage deepens and enriches every facet of life. Happiness is fuller; memories are fresher; commitment is stronger; even anger is felt more strongly and passes away more quickly.
Marriage understands and forgives the mistakes life is unable to avoid.
It encourages and nurtures new life, new experiences, and new ways of expressing love through the seasons of life.
When two people pledge to love and care for each other in Marriage, they create a spirit unique to themselves, which binds them closer than any spoken or written words.
Marriage is a promise, a potential, made in the hearts of two people who love, which takes a lifetime to fulfil.

Recording/photography at your wedding

A wedding album is a very special memento – we are happy to allow photography in the Ceremony Room at specified times. A single video recording is also permitted, but please inform the
Registration staff beforehand.

Confetti

Confetti is a familiar part of any wedding, but please ask your guests not to throw confetti inside the building. If your ceremony is at an Approved Venue, they will be happy to advise you regarding these details.

.

Fees (effective from 1st April 2012 to 31st March 2013 )

Attendance fees for marriage ceremonies at approved premises are normally payable to the Superintendent Registrar in advance of the wedding. Fees for register office marriages are payable on the day of the ceremony to the Registrar.

Contact the register office for current fee rates.

Both parties must have resided in a district in England or Wales for at least 7 whole days immediately prior to giving a Notice of Marriage.

This notice will then be displayed on the public notice board for 15 days, after which, provided all documentation has been received and cleared, an authority for your marriage to proceed will be issued.

If you live in a different district to where the marriage will take place, you will need to apply for and obtain the authority for your marriage to take place. This authority must be delivered to the Minister of the church or Superintendent Registrar of the district where you are to marry.

You will still be able to marry in any register office or approved premises in England or Wales irrespective of where you live, and your notice can still be taken up to one year in advance of the date of your wedding. A fee of £35.00 is currently charged for each notice given.

The origins and meaning behind some of our most cherished wedding traditions may surprise you.

Many of the traditions associated with modern day weddings can be found to have their roots in the customs and rituals of our ancestors.

Why does the bride stand on the left and groom on the right?
It is believed the practice goes back to times when the groom would ‘capture’ his bride by kidnapping her. Should the groom have to fight off other men who also wanted her as their bride, he
would hold her with his left hand whilst leaving his right hand free to use his sword.

Third finger, left hand
Engagement and wedding rings are traditionally worn on the third finger of the left hand. The Romans believed that the vein in that finger runs directly to the heart. The wedding ring represents a
never-ending circle, symbolising everlasting love.

Throwing confetti
Originates from the ancient Pagan rite of showering the happy couple with grain to wish them a fruitful union.

Tossing the Bouquet
In days gone by, women would try to rip pieces of the bride’s dress and flowers in order to obtain some of her good luck. To get away from the crowd the bride would toss her bouquet and run away.
Nowadays the bouquet is tossed to single women with the belief that whoever catches it will be the next to marry.

Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed,
Something Blue, and a Silver Sixpence in your shoe

‘’Something Old’’ signifies the bride’s link to her family and the past. The bride might, for example wear a piece of family jewellery or her mother’s/grandmother’s wedding dress.
‘’Something New” reflects hope for good fortune and success in the future. The bride often chooses the wedding gown as the‘new’ item.
‘’Something Borrowed’’ is often an item already worn by a happy bride at her wedding, such as a handkerchief or item of jewellery.
‘’Something Blue’’ dates back to biblical times when the colour blue was considered to represent purity and fidelity. Over time this has evolved from wearing blue clothing to wearing a blue
band around the bottom of the bride’s dress and more modern times where the bride wears a blue coloured garter.
‘’And a Silver Sixpence in your shoe’’ - the placing of a silver sixpence in the bride’s left shoe is a symbol of wealth. Not simply to bring the bride financial wealth but also a wealth of happiness and joy throughout her marriage.

At Approved venues

Weddings in these venues are more popular than ever, as couples discover that they offer any number of options and ideas including, the convenience of the ceremony, reception and entertainment all in one location.

The ceremony provided by the Essex Registration Service is a civil ceremony, with no religious elements. It should also be noted that marriages are not allowed to take place outdoors, or in temporary or moveable structures.

However, an increasing number of the venues now have gazebos and other facilities that enable couples to have a unique and memorable ceremony experience.

Where are the Approved Venues wedding ‘hotspots’ in Essex?

Some of the most popular ceremony venues in Essex include:

LEEZ PRIORY
A stunning Tudor mansion set in the heart of Essex was awarded The Wedding Ideas Magazine ‘Best Wedding Venue’ in 2007 and 2008. Civil ceremonies can be held in any of five different
settings including the stunning Great Tower.

PARKLANDS, QUENDON HALL
Parklands is a 17th Century Mansion on the Essex/Herts border. The venue is set in 100 acres of one of the country’s oldest deer parks. Ceremonies take place in various locations including
the silk-lined pavilion and a beautiful gazebo adjacent to the mansion.

GOSFIELD HALL
Winner of the Wedding Ideas Magazine ‘Best Wedding Venue’ in 2011, Gosfield Hall is a stunning Georgian Manor House which was once a Royal residence. The Queen Charlotte oak panelled
gallery with a 120ft long aisle is perfect for wedding ceremonies as is the carriageway which enables guests to sit outdoors during the ceremony.

THE FENNES
The Fennes won the ‘Best Wedding Venue’ award in 2008. The Georgian Manor House is set in 100 acres of beautiful Essex countryside. Elegant reception rooms overlook landscaped
gardens providing the ideal backdrop for your perfect day.

Other popular venues include The Reid Rooms at Margaret Roding, Stockbrook Manor in Stock, Hedingham Castle and Gaynes Park in Epping.

With Essex venues taking the ‘Best Wedding Venue’ award for four out of the last five years, we can confidently say that for a quality ceremony ‘The Only Way Is Essex’.
